Career Progression Pathways in the Australian Defence Force
The flowchart illustrates two initial pathways for career progression in electronics and communications within the Australian Defence Force (ADF):

Pathway One. Begin with completing a minimum of Year 10 education, then:
- Apply to the ADF as General Entry - Technical Recruit (Join the Navy and receive full trade training).

Pathway Two. Start by completing a Certificate III in Electronics and Communications, then:
- Apply to the ADF as a Qualified Recruit (make the most of your existing qualifications).
After complete training
- New Entry Sailor Course (approximately 9 weeks).
- Electronics Technician Initial Training (approximately 1 year).
- Specialisation Training (approximately 15 weeks).
- Submariner Training (if applicable, approximately 6 months).
Progress Into...
- Being posted to an Army unit and completing sea and shore postings.
- Advancing through training and ranks.
- Opportunities to attain further qualifications such as a Cert IV or Diploma in Electronics & Communications.
- Selection into advanced roles such as Engineer ranks (via an advanced diploma or degree entry scheme).

- Whether you already have a trade, you're an apprentice, or you have no experience at all, you'll earn a competitive salary from day one. You'll gain all the skills needed with extensive on-the-job trade training. If you have existing qualifications, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning.
- As your career progresses, there are plenty of opportunities to upskill or take on new challenges. As you take on further technical training and associated competencies, you may be entitled to the award of National Qualifications of Certificate IV in Electronics and Communications to Diploma in Electronics and Communications.
- You may also have the opportunity to be selected into the Engineer Officer ranks to further your studies via Advanced Diploma or Degree entry schemes.
