Below are the recommended pathways to becoming a Marine Technician.

Career Pathways in the Australian Defence Force

There are two initial pathways based on education level:

  1. Complete Year 10 (minimum) and apply to the ADF as General Entry - Technical Recruit (Join the Navy and receive full trade training).
  2. Complete a Certificate III in your respective trade and apply to the ADF as a Qualified Recruit (make the most of your existing qualifications).

After applying, complete training which may vary depending on recognition of prior learning. Training includes:

  1. New Entry Sailor Course (approximately 9 weeks).
  2. Marine Technician Initial Training (approximately 1 year).
  3. If applicable, Submariner Training (approximately 12 months).

Other ranks include Technical Recruit and Marine Technician Initial Training.

Further Information & Advice

  • Whether you already have a trade, you're an apprentice, or you have no experience at all, you'll earn a competitive salary from day one. You'll gain all the skills needed with extensive on-the-job trade training. If you have existing qualifications, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning.
  • During your Initial Employment Training, you'll get to specialise in one of the following trade disciplines: propulsion, electrical or hull maintenance and fabrication.
  • Marine Technician Submariners can specialise in diesel (propulsion) or electrical.
  • As your career progresses, there are plenty of opportunities to upskill or take on new challenges.
